About Us

Hunter Coatings is a Benjamin Moore Signature Store owned and operated by Andy and Jenny Stanush. They met and married in Wisconsin. They started a family in Texas. They bought a paint company in North Carolina. And that’s how the Stanush family story begins. But the story of Hunter Coatings began long before Andy and Jenny were born.

Hunter Coatings was founded by Vernon Hunter in 1947 as “Hunter Paint” on Church Street in downtown Charlotte, NC. Hunter Coatings’ oldest customer, Mint Hill Cabinet Shop, a one-man operation owned by M. C. Carriker, began purchasing product from Hunter when it opened in 1962. Mint Hill Cabinet Shop, currently owned by John Carriker, son of the founder, remains a very important customer of Hunter Coatings today.

Vernon Hunter owned and operated the store for 33 years until he sold it to John and Imogene Leupold in 1980, when John was 37 years old. The Leupolds added lacquer products to Hunter Paint’s offering in the early 1980s, which expanded the company’s customer base.

Andy and Jenny Stanush, the current owners, purchased Hunter Paint in July of 2007, interestingly, when Andy was 37 years old. Since the purchase, Andy and Jenny have grown the business, expanding its product offering to include eco-friendly lines of paint and lacquer with premium brands Benjamin Moore, ML Campbell and Sikkens.

Like many family-run businesses, you’ll often find Andy at the store, working with customers for the perfect color match or application technique. Jenny keeps busy helping the back office run smoothly; and their daughters help out with special projects from time to time. The Hunter staff is an extension of the Stanush family, all working together to provide excellence in product, service, training and support to the customers and markets they serve.
